Capra hircus

Domestic goats are one of the earliest animals domesticated by humans and can be found all over the world. Originally descended from wild goats in parts of western Asia, they are now raised on every continent except Antarctica. Goats are known for their curious personalities, rectangular pupils, and impressive climbing skills!

With hundreds of breeds worldwide, goats are carefully managed by farmers, ranchers, and animal care professionals. However, conservation still plays a role in their story. Some rare heritage breeds face declining numbers, and agricultural biodiversity programs work to preserve genetic diversity within domestic livestock. Maintaining diverse breeds helps protect against disease, supports sustainable farming practices, and preserves important agricultural history.

Goats have played an important role in human history for thousands of years, providing milk, fiber, and companionship. They are also used in modern conservation efforts for targeted grazing, helping manage invasive plants and reduce wildfire risk in certain habitats.

Did you know?

Their horizontal, rectangular pupils give them a wide field of vision to spot predators.

Goats are famous for climbing steep, rocky surfaces, and sometimes even trees!

Goats communicate with bleats, and mother goats can recognize their kids by sound alone.

Unlike sheep that graze low to the ground, goats prefer to browse leaves, shrubs, and higher vegetation.

Goats are happiest in groups and form strong social bonds.
