Acinonyx jubatus

The cheetah is the fastest land animal on Earth, capable of reaching speeds up to 60–70 miles per hour in short bursts. Built for speed, cheetahs have long legs, lightweight bodies, and a flexible spine that allows them to stretch their stride while sprinting. Their distinctive black “tear marks” help reduce glare from the sun and improve focus while hunting. Cheetahs are primarily found in parts of eastern and southern Africa, with a small, critically endangered population remaining in Iran.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the cheetah is currently listed as Vulnerable, with populations declining. Major threats include habitat loss, reduced prey availability, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal wildlife trade. Because cheetahs require large territories and prefer open landscapes, expanding human development has made survival increasingly challenging. Today, fewer than 7,000 cheetahs are estimated to remain in the wild. Conservation efforts focus on habitat protection, community-based programs that promote coexistence with farmers, anti-poaching initiatives, and genetic management in human care to maintain healthy populations.

As predators, cheetahs help maintain balance in savanna ecosystems by regulating prey populations. Their presence is a sign of healthy, functioning grasslands. Cheetahs also serve as powerful ambassadors for conservation. Protecting them means preserving wide, connected habitats that benefit countless other species.

Did you know?

Cheetahs can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just a few seconds.

Unlike most cats, cheetahs have semi-non-retractable claws for better traction while running.

Young cheetahs have a mantle of long, gray fur along their backs that may help them blend into tall grass. It also makes them look like honey badgers to confuse predators.

Cheetahs cannot roar like lions; instead, they chirp, purr, and hiss like house cats.

They often hunt during the day to avoid competition with larger predators.
